The Leavitt Group Internship
Chandler Dowell
Introduction
The Leavitt Group is an Insurance Company whose corporate headquarters is located in Cedar City. As an intern I was able to learn how to carry out ban reconciliations by receiving bank statements from banks around the U.S. and comparing the data with different firms who use the services of the Leavitt Group. I was also able to help with different accounting projects that were provided by the accounting controllers. Communicating in a business environment was a major take away from the internship as well.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities
For interns at the Leavitt Group there are many responsibilities that must be met each day in the office. Accountants count on each team member to do their part and contribute to a helpful, hardworking work environment. The first thing that I had to do when I got to the office was go through training. I did not know exactly what I was going to be required of me but after being trained as to what my responsibilities were, I knew that I would get the hang of it. Each month the interns are assigned different responsibilities.
I was assigned to work with 5 different agencies, reviewing their bank statements and balancing them with the statements from the bank. Each of the agencies had 2-4 different accounts. On the first of each month these statements would be sent to us (interns) for reviewing and we would have 15 days to review them and email back the issues that we found in each account. After we did this for each account, the accountant would email us back within a few days and we then had until the 25th of the month to post the reconciliation of the 2 accounts to the Leavitt Group accounting information system.
With the help of others and many failed attempts each account was able to be reconciled before the end of each month. Along with this month-long project, we were required to deliver the mail, help accountants in running audits for these agencies, and even doing some in-depth research on the purchases of these agencies to make sure that they were not committing fraud.

Experience
Upon ending the internship, I found myself wanting to keep learning and be in that same office atmosphere that the Leavitt Group provided. I missed the friends that I had made and the experiences that we shared. I even missed doing the hard and sometimes tedious projects that were required of us each day. This nostalgia made me realize that I would love to be an accountant in the future. I feel that it has helped me realize the career path that I want to take and what I need to do to get there.
